Steve 'Slapstick' Gal Newest NYR GM
In a press release today, Steve Gal was announced the newest General Manager for the New York Rangers. This came as a surprise, as rumors went out about another yet unnamed General Manager being signed. In his statement he explained how excited he was to be named the youngest Ranger GM in recent history. Stepping aside from his duty in a surprise move was former GM Glenn Sather. He later went on to say that he loved his years in New York, but it was definately time for some young blood. Gal will begin his duties shortly.

Gal Says "Messier is Back"
New York Rangers GM Steve Gal announced today that he quitely removed most of the coaching staff recently. He did, however, name some replacements. The current assistant coaches are Legendary defenseman Paul Coffey, former Colorado head and assistant coach Tony Granoto, former Chicago Wolves Assistant Coach Wendell Young, newcomer Mike Pelino, and someone Gal called one of New Yorks fan favorites. Who is this fan favorite? When asked on the street, Mr. Gal said "Well, I always liked keeping a good mystery, but I figure this is a better time than in the pressroom. And this is official... Mark Messier is Back." When asked more of the big signing, Gal said "I really like the move, and if he does good, who knows where he will be in a year." What this means is truly questionable, but is rumored gal is looking for a one-year deal with an older head coach to train Messier. More on this later.

Tverdovsky Almost Here
Earlier in the week, New York Rangers GM Steve Gal mentioned a possible trade for Oleg Tverdovsky from Carolina. Late yesterday evening, a reporter asked him for a little more information reguarding this move. He replied "Well, I cannot promise this officially yet, but it will sound like this. Peter Prucha and our fifth Round Draft Choice in 2006 will go to Carolina for Oleg Tverdovsky and their third Round Draft Choice in 2007." He continues with "As I said, this is unofficial, but l will tell fans to look for the full trade in the next couple of days."
Big Buy Outs?
In a surprise interview with a local radio station last night, Gal also announced that he is pushing for cap space space, and is contemplating buying out a few contracts."I am pushing hard t oget a few cheaper forwards, but to do this, I need to drop soem salary. The best situation is I can trade whomever I no longer need, but if not, I may be forced to consider buying a few guys out. Everyone will just have to wait until training camp to see what happens."

Sakic A Ranger?
Recent speculation has suggested that Steve Gal has worked out a trade in which will bring in superstar Avalanche forward Joe Sakic. With a public meeting with NYR fans comming soon, this rumor would add in material for all the fans to talk about. When asked of the rumor, Gal said "All I can say now of any trade rumor is that we are bringing in at least one former Stanley Cup winner. Be that Oleg (Tverdovsky, soon to be aquired from Carolina) or Joe Sakic, or anyone else at that matter I cannot yet say. When a deal is official, I will gladly tell everyone in person." He went on further to say "And you never know, maybe I will get a all-star forward and trade him right away to get even more depth. I would rather have to good lines than one great one." From what we gathered from anonomous sources, the trade will be Sakic and a third round draft pick in 2006 for goalie Kevin Weekes, defensiveman Darius Kasparitis, forward Martin Rucinsky, and a fifth and seventh round pick in 2006.

Tverdovsky Officially Here
As stated by the big boss in New York previously, "Peter Prucha and our fifth Round Draft Choice in 2006 will go to Carolina for Oleg Tverdovsky and their third Round Draft Choice in 2007." Many fans were upset to see Prucha go, but as Gal explained "I have a few big trades coming in to get better depth. This was only te beginning. My goal is to win the Stanley Cup. Period. No other goals. The road there is through a strong regualr season, which will hopefully allow us to have home ice advantage at least in the first two rounds. Based on that, Tverdovsky is that point man we need on the powerplay, and he is a sound defensiveman as well. This is not my last trade before or during the season. My tactic is to make big moves preseason, and a few minor moves throughout the season. If I dump enough salary, I will also get a great player at the deadline. It is no one elses fault but mine if the team on the ice does not gel, so missing the playoffs is not an option to me."

Sakic is a Ranger...Or is He? Big Trade Breakdown
In a big move today, Steven Gal announced that he aquired Joe Sakic and Colorodo's 3rd round draft pick 2007 from Colorado for Kevin Weekes, Darius Kasparitis, Martin Rucinsky, and a fifth and seventh round pick from the Rangers in 2006. However, while he was still packing, Gal informed Sakic that he was once again traded, but this time to Toronto. This trade was confirmed as Jeff O'Neil, Eric Lindros, and Jason Allison from Toronto for New Yorks Jarko Immonen, Chad Wisemen, Joe Sakic, and Martin Straka. When asked to comment on these two trades, gal said "Well, I felt that Sakic would be good trade bait. I knew I could keep him and have a great player and leader, but I decided to go with a different team. Good luck to all of the guys we gave up, and I apologise to everyone that this had to happen, but hey, this is proffesional sports."

Gal Interviews with Local TV Station
Yesterday, New York Rangers General Manager Steven Gal made headlines with what many claimed to be a terrible trade. He decided he would do an interview to explain himself. Here is the question and answer from that interview:
Q. Why were you chosen as the New York Rangers GM? A. Well, the owners felt it was time for a change, so Sather stepped down. I contacted them pretty much as a big hockey fan, and they told me I would be a great experiment. They wanted young blood who was not biased to any players or coaches. I was that person.
Q. You have had many trades as of late. Wy was that? A. Well, I felt our depth was a little weak, and our team was too much money. I originally intended to keep Sakic after I dealt for him, but I got an offer from Toronto I thought would cut costs and improve my depth all in one. When the trades all ended, I guess I upset some fans.
Q. Tell us about the upset fans. What was the issue? A. Well, the fans were happy to have All Star Center Joe Sakic. I felt the same way, but when I can make the team better with a trade, I will. It irritated the board as well, but it is my call. I talked to our new coach, he said go for it, and I did, so hopefully we can win because of it. Hopefully when the team does well together, the fans will understand. Until then, I guess they will have to accept my apology to them.
Q. On that note, tell us of the new coach, Geir Tore Myhre. A. Well, where do I start? He is from Norway and is used to a more defensive style, which we will nto necessarily use in the new NHL. I already told him my plan is to have one season with him to train Mark (Messier) how to be our future head coach. He liked the plan and said he will probably want to go home after this season anyway, but if the team is extremely successful, we also agreed we would talk of extending his contract.
Q. Only two more questions. First, can you breakdown the team? A. On defense, I like our team but would like to add a first liner just in case. Our guys can move the puck, score a few goals, pass, and, most importantly, defend our young goaltenders.
On offense, we have a heavy offense setup. I am happy with the lineu as it stands, and would only like to add some grit for the fourth line. I know we will get goals, so no need to trade our big guns.
In the net is our big question mark. I will tell the fans that Lundqvist is our number one. He is a great goalie with superstar potential. For now, his backup is Al Montoya. I would have liked to throw him in the AHL for a season, but until I can add someone with backup experience, I do not see it happening. I do know he is excellent in net, so I will not be sad to keep him.
Q. Finally, what are your predictions for your teams season? A. I have no predictions for the season other than hockey will be back in New York. I do, however, have goals for the season. The first is to finish above 50% winning percent, which is pretty easy with this team. Next is to make the playoffs, then to take a high seed in the playoffs. In the playoffs I want to do well, at least two rounds winning. Finally, I want ot win the cup. Thats it.
Q. Thank you for your time. A. No problem, any time.

Season to Start
Following a lockout and several seasons without a playoff spot, the New York Rangers are preparing to hunt for the Cup tonight. General Manager Steven Gal put together a good lineup which should turn some heads. Although he did not make any season promises, he did tell the press in a recent interview that he does have goals, the final was to "Win the Cup." In a following interview, he said "Technically the ultimate goal of every season is to hoist the Cup. From what our three to four previous Cup winners winners on our roster have told me, it is like nothing else in the world."
In a comment today, he said "I am really pumped to get this season rolling. Many fans are going to miss seeing Mess on the ice, but you can be certain to see him behind the bench."
October 8 at the Panthers' BankAtlantic Center, the Rangers will begin the quest for Lord Stanley's Cup. The home opener will be on Thursay, October 13 against the St. Louis Blues

New York GM Steven Gal was furious following two straight losses to start the season. He was quoted as to saying "Well, I guess we need a kickstart, but I take the blame, we need more time to gel."
